South Australia will once again bear the brunt of the heat with temperatures in Adelaide expected to hit 42C today.Further inland near Cooper Pedy, conditions are forecast to be even more extreme with a top of 47C forecast.
Climatologist Dr Blair Trewin said Australia may this week hit a record for its warmest day, exceeding the 40.3C average maximum temperature set in January 2013. St Kilda Beach is bound to be popular over coming days as Victoria weather builds to heatwave conditions."That's only happened once before in 1939 so it is certainly a very significant heatwave, particularly for December," he added.
Mr Dunlop said even healthy and fit people can struggle in the heat and encouraged everyone to follow some simple ways to stay cool including staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activity and taking cool showers or wearing a wet bandana to reduce heat stroke. There are also fears train networks will buckle under the heat particularly when temperatures are at their most extreme in the late afternoon coinciding with peak travel times.
