Annual headline inflation in Australia rose to 4 percent in August, up from 3.5 percent in July, with trimmed mean inflation remaining steady at 3.6 percent. The increase was largely driven by higher housing and transport costs, including new dwelling prices and automotive fuel prices following the removal of federal fuel excise relief. According to the Bureau of Statistics , housing was the largest contributor to annual inflation last month, reflecting rising costs for new dwellings and electricity.
"New dwelling prices rose 5.4 per cent in the 12 months to August as builders passed on higher costs for materials and labour," Rachael McCririck, ABS head of price statistics, said. Transport was the second-largest contributor to annual inflation, rising by 5.6 per cent due to higher automotive fuel prices.
