The Albanese government will invest an additional $3 billion into the National Broadband Network ( NBN ) to ensure affordable high-speed internet access, despite the availability of cheaper 5G alternatives. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the funding, stating that families and businesses deserve high-speed internet at an affordable price. This investment will focus on upgrading Australia's remaining fibre-to-the-node network, with the publicly-owned NBN Co contributing $800 million.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland emphasized the importance of this upgrade, stating that it will provide fast, reliable, and affordable broadband to all Australians. She argued that fibre is the future-proof technology for delivering the highest quality broadband, acknowledging that many Australians are opting for 5G networks. However, she stressed that fibre is globally recognized as the standard for ensuring top-tier broadband quality. Rowland also pointed out that the government is working with the existing infrastructure inherited from the previous administration while aiming to improve it. She criticized the previous government for failing to complete the NBN on its initial $29 billion budget, which ultimately ballooned to $58 billion. She further accused them of abandoning fibre for copper, wasting taxpayer money. The government also accused the opposition of intending to dismantle public ownership of the NBN, comparing this stance to their attempts to undermine Medicare and other essential services
