The US, Japan, and Australia have agreed to co-operate on a networked air defence architecture to counter China in the Pacific.

| US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida have agreed to start a new joint air defence strategy with Australia to counter China’s aggressive military threats in the Pacific.

Japan, the US and Australia have agreed to deepen their co-operation on defensive missile systems.The leaders met for a state visit at the White House on Wednesday where Mr Biden described the relationship with Japan as a “monumental alliance between our two great democracies”.

A senior White House official said the network air defence architecture and other actions were part of strengthening the Biden administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy. This week Australian, Japanese, US and Philippines warships began historic joint maritime exercises in the South China Sea, following clashes between Filipino and Chinese ships in contested areas.“When you have, like we did this week, the United States, Japan, Australia, and the Philippines doing an exercise together, when you have the trilat on Thursday, the country that’s isolated is China,” the White House official said.

Furthermore, this week Australia, the US and the United Kingdom said they were officially considering Japan’s inclusion in the AUKUS military pact, saying the country can help promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
