Pat Cummins cleaned up the Indian tail to steer Australia to a dominant victory in Adelaide, setting the stage for a blockbuster third Test at the Gabba in six days’ time.

Pat Cummins completed a five-wicket haul on day three of the Adelaide Test to help Australia level the Border-Gavaskar series with a spirited 10-wicket win.

Resuming their second innings at 5-128, India’s hopes of a miracle comeback were dashed with the last ball of the first over on Sunday when Rishabh Pant edged Mitchell Starc to Steve Smith at second slip. Cummins, who picked up the key wickets of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma the previous day, took the next three wickets – Ravichandran Ashwin , Harshit Rana and Ntish Kumar Reddy – to collect his 13th five-wicket haul in front of another healthy crowd of 33,184 at Adelaide Oval.

Indian No.11 Mohammed Siraj was greeted by Travis Head, wearing a helmet at short leg, when he came out to bat. The pair had a short conversation – possibly to discuss the events of the previous day, whenHead, who was named man of the match, took the catch to dismiss Siraj for seven off the bowling of Scott Boland to wrap up the Indian second innings, leaving Australia a target of 19 for victory.

The result ensures Australia maintain their perfect record with the pink ball in Adelaide and boosts their chances of beating India for the first time in a series since 2014-15.
