Australia’s hopes of another Davis Cup final appearance have ended after Alex de Minaur and Thanasi Kokkinakis suffered back-to-back singles defeats against champions Italy in Malaga. After Kokkinakis was downed in a tight three-set battle with Matteo Berrettini in the opening singles rubber on Saturday , de Minaur was outgunned once again in straight sets by world No.1 Jannik Sinner.

” De Minaur was up against it early on in the battle between the teams’ No.1s and twice had his serve broken as Sinner claimed the first set. The Australian and US Open champ then confirmed his dominance after breaking again to lead 5-4 and serving out to wrap up a ninth straight win over the Sydneysider just under a fortnight since he also outplayed de Minaur in the ATP Finals.
