Australia Nears HIV Elimination Goal but Faces Inequality and Rising STIs
HIV, Australia, UNAIDS

Australia has made significant progress in reducing HIV rates, reaching the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. However, disparities remain, with First Nations people and immigrant communities disproportionately affected. Syphilis cases are also on the rise, indicating that the fight against sexually transmitted infections is far from over.

Australia is edging closer to ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030, but progress is not being shared equally. The country has reached a major milestone with diagnoses falling by a quarter over the past decade, achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets for the first time.

However, First Nations Australians, overseas-born communities, and those diagnosed late continue to face significant risks. While Australian-born gay and bisexual men have seen a dramatic drop in infections, men born abroad have not experienced the same decline.

Additionally, syphilis rates have risen sharply, particularly among women and First Nations people, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and targeted interventions.
