Housing Minister Clare O’Neil says the government is “really worried” that one in three Australian students performed below expectations in NAPLAN. Figures this morning reveal thousands of NSW students have failed to meet basic benchmarks in the latest round of NAPLAN testing, with results exposing the sheer scale of the gap between advantaged children and their disadvantaged peers.O’Neil told Seven’s Sunrise these results are a real concern.
“This is something that the Albanese government is really really worried about,” O’Neil said.“There’s two things going on here, one of them is about resources and dollars, as you mentioned there, but we can’t forget what’s going on in the classroom.The federal government has an additional $16 billion that they are willing to offer the states, O’Neil said, but they will not “write a blank check”.
