Opposition foreign affairs spokesperson and former ambassador to Israel Simon Birmingham has criticised the government’s calls for a two-state solution as he commemorates the first anniversary of Hamas’ attacks on Israel.Speaking from Bondi ahead of a sunrise vigil commemorating the first anniversary of October 7, Birmingham said his message to Israeli communities around the world was that “Australia stands with you”.
“I think it’s incredibly concerning. And I think this is why our message needs to be firm that countries like Australia and the United States and our allies will support Israel’s right to defend itself and its right to continue to exist in the region, and that Hezbollah, Iran, Hamas are not going to be able to evict the Jewish people from the land of Israel through the use of force,” Birmingham said.
