Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth has repeated Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s call for former Labor senator Fatima Payman to stand down from the Senate before the end of her term to run as an independent at the next election. The development comes after in the Australian Financial Review, telling this masthead that she was ready for “full-body contact”, with plans to stand candidates across the country including in Albanese’s seat.
Speaking on Seven’s Sunrise, Rishworth said that if Payman “really wanted to be endorsed by the Australian people, she could stand down for the Senate and run herself at the next election”.“But it’s really a matter for her,” Rishworth said.“She wouldn’t be the first and won’t be the last senator that gets elected with a different party. And then decides to split from that party and run as an independent.” Rishworth said the prime minister had no reason to feel his seat was threatened.
