Former prime minister Paul Keating has made a series of controversial remarks about Australia’s military alliance with the US and China’s claim over Taiwan, calling the island “Chinese real estate”.Keating told ABC’s 7.30 program that US military strategy is all about China, and that it didn’t make sense for Australia to align with the US via AUKUS because China “has no strategic designs upon Australia”.“What this is all about is the Chinese laying claim to Taiwan.
We’re going to keep these Taiwanese people protected,’ even though they’re sitting on Chinese real estate.”Host Sarah Ferguson pulled Keating up on the reference to Taiwan as “Chinese real estate”, but Keating wasn’t deterred.He continued:Keating suggested China’s military escalation was nothing to worry about: “China’s got an economy now, according to the IMF, 20% larger than America.
