Peter Dutton to become opposition leader; Barnaby Joyce faces leadership challenge. Follow our live coverage
The Nationals party room is just minutes away from electing a new leader.
We’re expecting that party’s announcement to be made quicker because Peter Dutton is going to run for the leadership unopposed. Labor is ahead in Macnamara, and – if the seat is returned to the party – it would deliver Anthony Albanese a working majority in the House of Representatives even after a speaker is appointed on Wednesday. However, the Greens are not yet conceding in that contest.
There is now bipartisanship on the end goal, which is the net zero commitment by 2050. But, for me, I think the easy early step that the opposition could take is to recognise that the Labor government does have a mandate for its 43 per cent target [to reduce emissions by 2030] and to indicate that it will accept the outcome the verdict of voters on that.
The moderate Liberal, who lost his seat to independent Kylea Tink a fortnight ago, is taking questions from Radio National presenter Patricia Karvelas. The first question was about what role Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce had to play in the Coalition losing government.Oh, look, I think that there’s a whole package of reasons as to why we lost a sea of seats like mine. And clearly, climate change was one of the key issues.
There are [non-leafy] areas in Ryan. Areas of struggle and real issues around affordibility and, you know, and equity.
