After Opposition Leader Peter Dutton gave a speech on Monday claiming that nuclear was the only path to net zero by 2050, Teal MP Monique Ryan has claimed Dutton doesn’t “actually believe” in the proposal. Speaking to Nine’s Today, Ryan said many governments since the 1970s had considered the potential for nuclear energy in the Australian energy market, and that “every single one” had found it doesn’t compare to other sources of electricity.
And that’s why he hasn’t presented any costings to the Australian public,” Ryan said.Labor MP Amanda Rishworth, who also joined the Today panel, concurred, saying Dutton’s claims that former Labor prime minister Bob Hawke would have been pro-nuclear was “the art of distraction”.“He is verbalising for... a former revered Labor leader, someone that can’t give a right of reply because he passed away tragically five years ago,” Rishworth said.
