United States President Joe Biden will try to coax Xi Jinping into ratcheting up pressure on Moscow to end its war in Ukraine tomorrow , in his first phone call with the Chinese president since the invasion began.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki says the call “is part of our ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication”. The Biden administration has tried to persuade Beijing not to contribute to the war. The White House’s view is that China has tacitly supported Russia’s invasion, and the US has repeatedly warned Xi’s government that it would suffer consequences if it provides direct support for the Kremlin – something Australia has endorsed.White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with China’s top diplomat, Politburo member Yang Jiechi, in Rome earlier this week for about six hours.
