Foreign Minister Penny Wong says her position has been made clear to Papua New Guinea regarding security in the region, after China approached the Pacific nation with a policing deal.Wong told ABC Radio Nation that Australia’s position is that stability in the region is best achieved if security is provided “within the Pacific family”.“That is Australia’s position,” Wong said from Port Moresby on Thursday.
”Wong is part of a group of senior federal ministers who travelled to Port Moresby this week for annual ministerial talks with the PNG government in a bid to strengthen security ties.China approached PNG with a policing deal as the nation struggled to contain the outbreak of deadly tribal violence.Asked how comfortable the Australian government would be with such an arrangement, Wong said the whole region would be better off if security comes from within.
