Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr was on ABC News Breakfast this morning, where he revealed the methods by which Beijing attempts to penalise the small Pacific nation for its diplomatic recognition of Taiwan. Palau has a population of 18,000 people, and lies north of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia in the western Pacific Ocean. It is among the 12 diplomatic allies of Taiwan, and hence do not have official relations with Beijing.
“Palau we say is a pristine paradise and we welcome all visitors, but it’s also important for us that we are not so reliant on one market so that it can’t be weaponised.” A new direct commercial flight between Brisbane and Palau was recently launched, as Palau hopes to diversify its tourism market. Whipps Jr has previously invited US President Donald Trump to snorkel with him in Palau, telling News Breakfast it would help Trump understand the climate change impacts “we see on a daily basis”.
