The mean temperature for winter 2023 is tracking at 1.54 degrees above the seasonal average.

Australia is expected to have experienced its warmest winter on record ahead of what experts are forecasting will be a hot and dry spring, bringing increased bushfire risk to many parts of the country.

Climate experts were forecasting below-average rainfall and unusually warm temperatures ahead for spring throughout much of the country, especially for Western Australia and parts of the south-east, including Victoria. The National Council for Fire and Emergency Services’ spring outlook identified large parts of NSW and Queensland, as well as hotspots in South Australia and the Northern Territory, as having increased bushfire risk in 2023.has meant higher than average growth for Australian bushland, contributing to the increased fire risk.

Global sea surface temperatures were the highest on record for the months of April to July, with heatwaves in parts of Europe contributing to theBureau of Meteorology hydrologist Masoud Edraki said the global climate system was looking “very unusual right now”.
