Australia Post boss Paul Graham stopped short of ruling out job losses from the review of the government-owned corporation’s activities.
Unions and the Coalition are preparing to fight any moves by Australia Post to wind back daily mail delivery around Australia, warning regional banking and retail services must be strengthened as part of a major review.
“Provided that we are able to remain sustainable and commercially viable, that is actually good for jobs. We have grown parts of our business where we need more people, and we think overall, the prospect for the future is a positive one,” he told“We continue to see the role of the postie change as we see our parcel business increasing and mail decline. We’re working very proactively with the unions on what future models potentially could look like.
Communication Workers Union national president Shane Murphy called for robust postal service to be protected, warning against permanent moves to downgrade letter delivery akin to temporary COVID-19 changes introduced by the former Morrison government. The union wants Australia Post to be given a banking licence, to lock in services and promote competition in the banking sector.
