Australia recorded its driest spring, intensifying the nation's drought, while daytime temperatures for the whole year are running at the hottest on record.showed Australia averaged just 27.4 millimetres of rain across the season, almost two-thirds below the long-run average. Western Australia had its driest spring, while NSW had its driest since 2002, and the Murray-Darling basin had the least August-October rainfall since 1982.
"Even if they received as much rain in December alone, Tenterfield would still have their driest calendar year on record," Dr Trewin said. "Extremely dry conditions and very much above average temperatures led to increased fire risk across New South Wales and Queensland during spring," the bureau said.
Last week, the bureau predicted the relatively hot conditions of spring would extend through summer for almost all of the country, while eastern Australia has strong odds for a drier than usual December-February.
