Australia records deadliest 12 month period for car accidents in almost 12 years with fresh calls for first aid training for L-platers
New data has revealed the death toll on Australia’s roads has risen to the highest level in almost 12 years as the surge in fatalities prompts calls for drivers to learn first aid. Picture: NCA Newswire/ Gaye Gerard An astronomical 107.7 per cent increase in road deaths was recorded for the Northern Territory, with a jump from 26 deaths to 54.
The ambulance guild said the first three to five minutes after a traffic incident were critical as evidence showed bystander first aid reduced hospital deaths and severe injury before emergency services can reach the victims of a crash. “Simple skills such as this can make a huge difference, which is why we’re calling on the NSW Government to take action and make first aid a mandatory part of learner driver training and join the numerous countries worldwide already doing this.”
