While Australia’s relations with China have warmed, data shows economic ties are at their lowest levels in more than five years and are unlikely to bounce back.

They argue that the US and its allies, like Japan, Australia and the UK, are isolated, and not China.” An analysis of Australian Research Council so-called Discovery Projects shows Chinese partnerships have been falling. The analysis by the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology in Sydney shows there were 15 Australia-China collaborations in 2024, compared to 26 in 2023, 23 in 2022, 48 in 2021, 55 in 2020 and 70 in 2019.

“If we are worried about Chinese scientific advances, it seems the most obvious thing to do is remain connected to Chinese scientific advances.”Data released by The Group of Eight Universities shows academic co-publications between Australia and China rose 69 per cent from 10,924 in 2017 to 18,475 in 2022, making China Australia’s third-largest research collaborator behind the United States and the United Kingdom. It did not provide data for 2023.
