Adam Elliot talks through his first feature film in 15 years, and his careful trademark balance of tragedy, comedy and clay.
Adam Elliot 's second feature film Memoir of a Snail centres on gloomy Grace, voiced by Succession actor Sarah Snook.Memoir of a Snail — the new feature-length film from Australian filmmaker Adam Elliot , best known for the 2003 Oscar-winning short Harvie Krumpet — began from the same place as all his other claymations: Irritation.
"I started to be interested in the question, 'Why are we bowerbirds? Why do we collect stuff we don't actually need?' The more I researched, the more I discovered that hoarders have usually suffered a huge degree of trauma — more often than not, the loss of a sibling or child." His off-kilt dark humour can be summed up by the many tears in Memoir of a Snail, which were made by mixing together hair gel and sexual lubricant. Elliot relishes passing this fact on.
In all, eccentric clay characters carry on the best they can through life's cruelties, accepting their scars and quirks as badges of honour while learning to embrace small joys. Their vivaciousness isn't unrealistic; it's hard-earned. Often, a younger character learns from an older, embattled one – in Memoir, that's Pinky, the character that Elliot identifies the most with.
From food to flames, all 7,000 individual items seen on-screen throughout Memoir of a Snail are handmade. Elliot and his team of seven animators declined to use CGI or digital effects, even though stop-motion animation is a notoriously tedious medium. Filming took 33 weeks, with a day of shooting amounting to five-to-ten seconds, the figures degrading with each movement under the lights.
