Australia’s entry to the Venice Biennale is a vast chalked family tree stretching back more than 65,000 years to the beginnings of time.

The curtain has risen on Australia’s entry to the 60th Venice Biennale - a vast hand-drawn chalked family tree stretching back 65,000 years before colonial settlement.

Australia’s installation was unveiled at a media preview this week as the Israeli artist Ruth Patir and curators of the Israeli pavilion, saying they would only open their exhibition when a ceasefire and hostage release agreement had been reached. Among the chalked names in the Australian work is Moore’s great-uncle, who accidentally killed his own father in a dispute over unpaid wages and spent nine months in Brisbane’s Bogo Road Jail.

A reflection pool has been built in the pavilion’s centre over which more than 500 document stacks have been suspended.
