Anthony Albanese has faced questions about Australia's future in the Commonwealth amid a renewed push for the nation to become a republic.

Amid a renewed push for Australia to become a republic, Mr Albanese on Tuesday described the Commonwealth as"an important part of our history".

"So, at some stage, I'm a republican, I think we will make that decision to have an Australian as our head of state."But we'll stay in the Commonwealth, it's an important part of our history. "I'm a republican. But I think that as Prime Minister, you've got to respect the institutions which are there," he told the Marty Sheargold Show.
