While Australia boasts a world-class healthcare system, rising out-of-pocket costs for GP visits are putting significant pressure on the system, particularly impacting young adults aged 16 to 34. Bulk-billing rates, where Medicare covers the full cost of a GP visit, have declined for this age group, leading many to delay or forgo necessary medical care due to expense.
But there are many signs that the system is under pressure, one being the out-of-pocket costs many pay to visit a GP.
Young people have been disproportionately affected: more than 15 per cent of those aged 25-34 said they had delayed or not seen a GP because of the cost. “We know young people are doing it especially tough and are more likely to have delayed care due to costs,” said RACGP president Michael Wright.
