The Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA) has released data for organ donation rates in Australia last year. While there was improvement in the number of transplants, the consent rate by families rose by only one per cent and donor registrations have plummeted.

The Organ and Tissue Authority last month released data for Australia's organ donation rates in 2023.

"I was sweating profusely. I could hear the triple-0 call operator on speaker and explained what happened. Longest 10 minutes in history," he said. Donation only happens if a deceased donor's organ is a match with someone on the waitlist needing that organ. Rob Manning, who received a liver transplant during the pandemic and has been passionate about improving the numbers, said the data was not a good sign."Not only did more people die in the right way, fewer families said yes ."

Dr Opdam said measures taken in Victoria and New South Wales such as "strict lockdowns" and the limit on people able to visit loved ones in hospital had restricted consent rates.
