Australia's Peter Bol has finished his campaign at the World Athletics Championships with a seventh placing in the final of the 800m in Oregon.

Bol was aiming to become the first Australian man or woman since the inaugural world championships in Helsinki in 1983 to finish with a medal in the event.

Bol settled in fourth and looked comfortable but eased back to sixth at the bell as some of the leading lights in the field, including Canada's Marco Arop, went forward, passing early leader Slimane Toula of Algeria. As they came to the bend, Olympic champion Emmanuel Korir of Kenya surged up to the shoulder of Arop as the two went clear.
