The Australian Government has secured 450,000 doses of a third-generation monkeypox vaccine.
Speaking after the National Cabinet Meeting on Thursday, Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said Australia is one of only a few countries that have been able to secure supplies of the"highly contested" vaccine. A total of 100,000 doses will arrive before the year's end, while the remaining doses will be delivered in 2023.
"The Albanese Government has responded early to the monkeypox outbreak, securing supplies of the third-generation vaccine in a time of limited supply and significant global demand," Mr Butler said in a statement. The infection spreads through close skin-to-skin physical contact with someone who has symptoms, such as when you are having sex, or by direct contact with contaminated objects, such as bedding, towels or clothes.
"There's a lot of rash on the whole body as well as flu-like symptoms. In this current outbreak, though, it can be quite specific and often affects the genital areas, it can cause periodontitis, a very painful condition as well as other ways it presents. "Essentially it will be people at high risk of monkeypox who have had been in contact with someone in the last 14 days," he said.
