Australian Health Minister Mark Butler says Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will reiterate the case for exemptions from US steel tariffs when he speaks to President Donald Trump. The call comes after Trump announced a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports, prompting concerns for Australian exporters. Butler emphasizes the importance of Australian exports to the US supply chain and their positive impact on American jobs.
As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese prepares for his critical phone call with Donald Trump , Health Minister Mark Butler says the government will be repeating the argument that secured Australian exemptions from similar tariffs in Trump ’s first administration.Butler said the call was scheduled before the president’s 25 per cent steel and aluminium tariff announcement.
“The timing is important so the PM can make the case strongly to the US president that there should be an exemption on Australian exports,” Butler told ABC News Breakfast.“We know that steel and aluminium exports into the US market feed directly into their supply chain. They’re good for American jobs. It’s a case we’ve made in the past to the US administration, and the PM, I can assure your viewers, will be making that case very strongly sometime today again.
