Volcano experts say Australia needs to be better prepared for a potential volcanic eruption.
At least 400 volcanic centres or events have erupted in the past 4.5 million years in the volcanic province that stretches from Melbourne across to SA.The last eruption was about 5,000 years ago in the Mount Gambier and Mount Schanck area of SA, however Dr Handley said that did not necessarily mean it would be another 7,000 years before another eruption.
A current study has been looking into just how fast magma moved to reach the Earth's surface during previous eruptions. Ms McGill said any future volcanic eruptions were more likely to occur somewhere else in the field, rather than at a previous volcanic site and there would be a degree of warning.
