Foreign Minister Penny Wong has warned Australians to “exercise a high degree of caution in New Caledonia” as the death toll on the island has risen to six amid violent protesting.

The Australia n government has issued strong new warnings for visitors to New Caledonia amid escalating violence and a climbing death toll due to violent riots.

The sixth death has been reported as a man killed in an exchange of fire at a barricade at Kaala-Gomen in the north of the island, a French security official has reported.Pro-independence riots have broken out in New Caledonia. Picture: X There are more than 3,000 people stuck on the island trying to leave as commercial flights have been cancelled due to the chaos.“We continue to advise reconsider your need to travel for metropolitan Noumea due to civil unrest, travel disruptions and limited essential services,” Australia’s government agency smart traveller has warned.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for calm while condemning the “undignified and unacceptable character” of the riots. According to the Noumea agreement of 1998, Paris delegated more political power to New Caledonia and even allowed three referendums, all of which decided against independence.
