The Great Barrier Reef is likely to avoid being listed as in danger for at least another year as a United Nations body recommends delaying a decision on its World Heritage status.

Special Envoy for the Great Barrier Reef Senator Nita Green said UNESCO's draft decision was "particularly welcome news for regional communities in Queensland, where the Reef supports local jobs and local economies".Despite avoiding the "In Danger" listing, the reef still faces multiple threats. The reef also faces other environmental perils such as outbreaks of crown-of-thorns starfish, a predator that feasts on coral.
"The Great Barrier Reef faces the fight of its life, a fight that is set to get harder with a predicted El Niño increasing the likelihood of marine heatwaves and coral bleaching," she said.
