A 5,000 kilometre long cloudband travelling west to east is expected to drench parts of the country over the coming days. Following a second rainband, a separate weather system is threatening to bring heavy rain from NSW to Tasmania from Saturday to Thursday.

Autumn is wrapping up with a widespread soaking across Australia as a 5,000 kilometre long cloudband engulfs the country from the tropics to Tasmania.will continue its progression east during the coming days – and by Sunday will have brought rain to around 90 per cent of Australia.

Rain will continue falling across most of Australia this week, with the majority of the country likely to see at least another 10mm.Before this week most of Australia had received no meaningful rain for around 2 months, but the first north-west cloudband has already produced solid falls across most states.

Exactly how intense the weather becomes depends mainly on the low's distance from the coast, and modelling is currently showing a wide range of scenarios from a position well offshore to numerous near coastal impacts from multiple centres. The more extreme examples of East Coast Lows trigger widespread flooding, significant wind damage and severe coastal erosion, but it's too early to forecast the impacts from the coming system.

This next system will develop under a similar setup – a powerful cold front linking with a stream of tropical moisture from the northeast Indian Ocean.
