When I was working on a cruise ship, a noticeboard poster said it all: “Please remember that Americans consider it acceptable to brag about their kids. Australians do not.”
I once performed standup comedy on an international cruise ship. Just once. I couldn’t handle the sea sickness, the homesickness … and every other sickness. But I’ll always remember a poster on a notice board in the crew area that read: “When conversing with passengers, please remember that Americans consider it acceptable to brag about their kids. Australians do not.”
Another political example is Peter Garrett, lead singer of Midnight Oil who made a career speaking truth to power. He was always the beloved rebel, taking on the injustices of our nation through catchy post-punk rock songs. When he became a politician, however, his popularity burned like the beds he sang about. Aussies get behind an underdog, but they tend to resent a top dog. As big as Australia is, it seems there’s just no room for ego. Or rock’n’roller MPs.
Australians just don’t revere successful people in the same way. I doubt Jim from Jim’s Mowing would have such a hot run in politics — though the lawns at parliament would look fantastic.
