Australia win ninth gold in pool as McKeon snares her own seventh medal | tomdecent

A stunning final leg by Cate Campbell in the women’s 4x100m medley relay has propelled Australia to its highest ever gold medal haul in the pool in Olympic history.

In the first event of the day, the 50m freestyle, McKeon continued her brilliant form, touching the wall first in 23.81, an Olympic record, ahead of Sweden’s Sarah Sjoestroem and Denmark’s Pernille Blume .Her two golds on Sunday leave her with seven medals in Tokyo, to go with the four medals she won in Rio in 2016.

But in what could have been her last Olympic moment, Campbell saved her best for last. She went into the water for the final freestyle leg with Australia in second place before powering home with a final split of 52.11 to hit the wall in first place , ahead of USA and Canada . McKeon now has the equal record for the most medals by any female athlete at an Olympics . Soviet gymnast Maria Gorokhovskaya managed the feat at the 1952 Helsinki Games.
