Australian academic Timothy Weeks — who was previously held hostage by the Taliban — returns to Afghanistan to 'celebrate' the regime's one year in power.
After his release, the Australian teacher converted to Islam and has previously praised the work of the Taliban."I came here with a dream to learn about Afghanistan and now I'm coming again to complete my journey, this is the part two of my journey," he said
"I was a prisoner. It wasn't easy … I was beaten. I was kept in difficult conditions … but, after all of this, I am here again," he said. Media reports surfaced earlier this year that Mr Weeks planned to return to Afghanistan, however, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has not answered questions about whether it was aware of his planned trip."The Australian government is aware of reports an Australian citizen, Timothy Weeks, may have returned to Afghanistan," the statement said.
