Three Australians are poised to board a convoy of three ships in an attempt to break Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Three Australians are among a group of hundreds of activists in Turkey poised to board a flotilla that seeks to break Israel’s long blockade of aid into Gaza.
Coward does not have a background in humanitarian work, and said that before arriving in Turkey last week, he had never travelled abroad further than New Zealand. Freedom Flotilla Coalition spokesman James Godfrey said the Australians had been selected to join about 200 activists from more than 30 countries on board the large cargo vessel and two cruise ships.Godfrey, who is also a spokesman for Free Gaza Australia, said the mission had been planned towards the end of last year, and described Israel’s blockade as “illegal, barbaric and inhumane”.
“We’ve been involved in many discussions about the various possibilities that could take place. People are mentally prepared, as physically prepared as they can be.“They’re undergoing training in Istanbul. They each have a significant support crew back from where they are from who are supporting them in all different sorts of ways as they embark.”
A DFAT spokesperson urged those wishing to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza to do so through established channels.
