A recent ranking by Cirium reveals that Australian airlines, including Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia, are struggling to keep up with international rivals in terms of on-time performance.

Australia’s three major airlines - Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia - are trailing their international counterparts in terms of punctuality, placing them at the bottom of a global ranking released on Thursday. Qantas emerged as the most punctual among the Australian airlines, with 73.85% of its flights arriving within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. Jetstar, Qantas’ budget arm, and competitor Virgin Australia recorded on-time performance rates of 73.39% and 72.7% respectively.

However, these figures pale in comparison to the punctuality of Aeromexico, a Mexican airline, which boasted nearly 87% of its flights landing on time. Saudia, the national carrier of Saudi Arabia, secured the second spot globally with an on-time performance rate exceeding 86%. Japan Airlines topped the Asia Pacific region with an impressive 80.9% on-time performance. Cirium, the aviation data provider that compiled this data, has been ranking airlines for timeliness for 16 years. CEO Jeremy Bowen acknowledged the challenges faced by airlines in 2024, citing severe weather patterns and a summer technology outage. Despite these hurdles, the top-performing airlines deserve recognition for their commitment to punctuality. Delta Air Lines, based in Atlanta, achieved the highest rating among US carriers, reaching over 83% on-time performance and securing the third spot globally, despite a computer outage that led to thousands of flight cancellations in July. United Airlines followed closely with nearly 81% on-time performance, while Alaska Airlines trailed at just over 79%. Cirium also highlighted other regional winners, including budget Spanish carrier Iberia Express, Panama’s Copa Airlines, and South African low-cost carrier FlySafair
