Originally a network of trails to connect mountain villages, the track stretches for 96 kilometres from the Kokoda Plateau in the north to Owers Corner in the south.Australian forces were stationed in the area from July 1942 to stop Japan advancing towards the PNG capital of Port Moresby. More than 600 Australians were killed during the campaign, and thousands more became ill or were seriously injured.

Mr Albanese’s visit could coincide with an official delegation from China, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi. China wants to finalise security agreements with PNG as it seeks to build influence in the Pacific.
