There isn’t a standard reaction to hearing your art is being sent to the moon. wildlife artist Maegan Oberhardt, recalling the email she received last month which said three of her works would be included in the Lunar Codex , a set of time capsules heading for the lunar south pole in 2025. “It was so bizarre,” says Oberhardt. “I was like ... this isn’t real.
”Oberhardt, from Bobinawarrah in north-east Victoria, is one of 31 Australian artists recently announced as semi-finalists in the Art Renewal Centre’s 17th International Salon Competition. A New York-based foundation that champions 21st century realism, the centre runs this prize to offer artists international exposure and cash prizes. Oberhardt and 22 other Australians have since progressed as finalists and the overall winners are announced on January 7. Interstellar exposure is just an added bonus. Images of all 1970+ works that made the semifinals will be packaged into a multimedia archive made with NanoFiche – a small, nickel-based analog preservation media that lasts around 1 million years – and launched through a NASA mission via a SpaceX rocket. Oberhardt, 27, has three works going up: fumage portraits (as she calls it, “painting with fire”) of a brumby, two Clydesdales and a pink gallah.The Lunar Codex is a passion project run by Samuel Peralta, a semi-retired physicist and author from Canada. He came up with the idea during COVID, when regular exhibitions were not possible, and describes it as “a message in the bottle for the future that during this time of war, pandemic and economic upheaval people still found time to create beauty”
