to become a part-member of the European Southern Observatory, giving us access to a range of smaller telescopes. That deal expires in 2027, and local astronomers are anxious for Australia to upgrade to a full membership as soon as possible.

“If Australia is to maintain its position as a lead researcher in astronomy, then we have to be involved in major projects,” said University of Sydney astronomer Professor Geraint Lewis. But not all members of the astronomy community are excited. “Many of us have been impacted by the effect of this completely single-minded pursuit of [European Southern Observatory] membership at the expense of many other projects,” said one senior astronomer, who asked not to be named so they could speak freely“People are generally excited about the prospect, but concerned about the impact it’s having on non-ESO related projects.”Credit:The key to an optical telescope’s power is its size.
