Sarah Wilson is living her dream life in a city she says treasures lively arguments and genuine curiosity over wealth and property. This is how she spends her weekends.
Sarah Wilson is a podcaster, journalist and the author of books on giving up sugar, coping with anxiety and finding meaning in life. She moved to Paris last year.| I prepare for the weekend by visiting a farmers’ market just up the road from me, in a little park. The produce is incredible. It seems to be the way people shop here: buy a bunch of things at your weekly local market, and then top up – because you’ve only got a tiny fridge and a tiny kitchen in a tiny apartment.
The secondhand scene is really big here, and there are subsidies for repair shops and taxes on fast fashion. Everywhere in Paris, you’ll see by-the-kilo secondhand shops. You literally pay by the kilo. The shop I go to has really high-quality stuff, and it’s not ridiculously priced. So I’ll ride to visit a friend. There are lots of bike schemes, and I rent one for a monthly fee from a company called. It’s an electric bike, and they supply everything.
Or I might meet up with some of the huge community of Australian female artists and creatives here, who are doing incredible stuff. We’ll quite often get together at an, and bring bottles of wine and just talk. There might be Indigenous women there, dancers, ceramicists, poets. It’s so interesting just hearing everyone’s story.Or there are little events going on all the time. This is a city full of small, bespoke events for about €10 . A concert, a book reading.
I always knew I would live in Paris. It always seemed too decadent and ridiculous to actually do it, but then you reach an age where you go, ‘Well, other people are buying McMansions or sending their kids to private boarding schools, or whatever, and I’ll do this.’I love Australia, but I was tired of being so cynical and critical of it, so I figured it was best to get away.
