Tensions again flare between sections of Australia's Sikh and Hindu communities in the wake of a contentious vote designed to build political support for an independent Sikh state in India.

One Sikh organisation told the ABC a man with a pro-Khalistan sticker on his car was attacked by men hurling abuse.

"Police have commenced an investigation into the incident. As inquires continue police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or information to contact Parramatta Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."Sikh groups backing the Khalistan referenda say their community is being targeted and threatened by Indian nationalists.

A spokesperson for the NSW Minister for Multiculturalism Steve Kamper told the ABC the recent arrests were "concerning". Tensions between members of the Sikh and Hindu communities boiled over after an unofficial secession referendum in Melbourne.
