Experts warn of the need for vigilance against lone-wolf style radical Islamic terrorist attacks, citing the New Orleans incident as a reminder of the persistent threat.

Australia n authorities have been warned to remain vigilant against lone-wolf style radical Islamic terrorist attacks similar to the one in New Orleans that killed 14 people. National security experts say Islamic State (IS) and other terrorist groups are seeking to recruit individuals angered by the war in Gaza. They urge authorities not to overlook the terrorism threat, despite a focus on foreign interference and espionage.

Christopher Raia stated that former US Army soldier Shamsud-Din Jabbar was “100 per cent inspired by ISIS”. Jabbar died in a shootout with police after driving into New Year’s revellers in New Orleans’ popular Bourbon Street area. An Islamic State group flag was found in his truck. Clive Williams, a visiting fellow at the Australian National University, says while IS is not as powerful as it was a decade ago, it has been gaining ground in Africa and continues to attract Western recruits. Williams considers the New Orleans attack a wake-up call, emphasizing that such incidents can happen anywhere. He believes a similar attack is less likely in Australia due to better security measures for major events. Williams, a former Australian Army intelligence officer, suggests American authorities might be complacent about the threat of radical Islamic terrorism and urges Australian domestic spy agency ASIO to remain vigilant. He notes that foreign interference and espionage have taken priority in recent years, leading to less focus on terrorism, but believes there is a growing recognition that terrorism needs more attention. Williams adds that IS has been attempting to exploit anger over the war in Gaza as a tool for radicalization
