Defence Minister Richard Marles has decided to strip up to nine Australian commanders of their war medals following the findings of the Brereton inquiry into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan. Tasmanian senator Jacquie Lambie has criticised the timing of the decision, calling it 'atrocious' and raising concerns for the mental health of veterans.
Jacquie Lambie has accused the government of being "insensitive", as it handed down its decision to strip the war medals of Australian commanders. Defence Minister Richard Marles has made the final call to remove the citations of up to nine Australian commanders who served in the Afghan war, following the Brereton war crimes inquiry. The exact number and rank of those losing their war medals is being kept secret, with the government saying it is complying with privacy laws.
There are separate criminal investigations being conducted into direct allegations of war crimes. Marles decided to revoke the honours as he moved to finalise the government's response to the explosive findings of the Brereton inquiry into alleged war crimes . In 2020, the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force, Major General Paul Brereton, recommended 19 soldiers face investigation for the "murder" of 39 prisoners and civilians.
