An Australian couple faces a hefty fine after an alleged disturbance in an airplane toilet on a flight from Hobart to Sydney. The woman was accused of assaulting another passenger, while both were charged with consuming alcohol not provided by the crew and failing to comply with safety instructions.

An Australian couple facing court on Monday are looking at a potential $13,750 fine after an alleged disturbance caused in the aeroplane toilets on a flight from Hobart to Sydney on Sunday, 29 December. A 53-year-old woman was accused of allegedly grabbing and shaking another passenger while exiting the aircraft toilet and charged with assault, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said on Monday.

She and a 45-year-old man were allegedly drunk after consuming alcohol they had brought with them onto the flight. They were escorted off the aircraft by the AFP after airline staff called for assistance. The woman and man were later charged with one count each of failing to comply with safety instructions by cabin crew, and one count each of consuming alcohol not provided by crew. The maximum fine for these offences is $13,750. The maximum penalty for the woman’s assault charge is two years in jail. They faced the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney on Monday. The AFP responded to over 400 incidents involving drunk people at major airports last year. “We urge travellers to be mindful of their behaviour at airports these summer holidays – you don’t want to start the new year with a significant fine or worse, behind bars,” AFP Sergeant Luke Stockwell said. “Bad behaviour at airports is not only disrespectful to other travellers, airport workers and airline staff, but it’s a safety risk and usually leads to more serious offences. “The AFP is increasing patrols at all major airports during the holidays and will not tolerate dangerous, disruptive or abusive behaviour from travellers.” If you require a police presence at an airport, or wish to report an incident or provide information, please call the AFP’s Airport Watch on 131 AFP (131 237)
