A device developed in part by Brisbane experts that can extend the preservation time of donor organs played a key role in the recent successful transplant of a pig’s heart into a human in the United States.
CCRG had developed a hypothermic ex-vivo perfusion device, which not only preserved the heart but kept it infused with a special solution that prevented a number of complications that arise when an organ is just put on ice for transport. “Their preclinical results encouraged our use of the same system here and gave us confidence to move ahead with a transplant into a human.”
He stressed that Dr Griffith and the rest of the US-based team deserved the credit for the medical breakthrough, but said he was proud that the Brisbane-developed device had been part of the historic procedure.
