The Australian Electoral Commissioner, fresh from delivering the Voice referendum, explains why taking risks and having a crack is the best career advice.
It was probably from my first boss, who said: In life you have to take risks and just do stuff. Never back off from a challenge, and when you see something, even if you think you can only remotely do it, give it a crack.
Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers says elections are the most complex peacetime logistic events in Australia. If I go all the way back, it was my decision to go to Duntroon . I led a fairly quiet existence with a privileged upbringing in a quiet part of Sydney, and really provided a degree of focus and put a rocket up me in many ways.
Given the large task I have here at the AEC, I don’t have a huge amount of time in the morning. I don’t have breakfast, I leave that to lunch.Things are changing so rapidly, the advice towould be that you have to deliver excellence in elections all the time. That’s the most critical thing you do, but you also have to look to the future.
We had done a fundamental revolution of the AEC in that period with new processes, procedures, doctrine and standard operating procedures, and that’s also when parliament changed the nature of Senate voting, so we had a huge project that we had to do. We tried everything, the pendulum swung from 2013 right to the other end of the spectrum. I think I aged 10 years.I read a fair bit. If I were to re-read some book a few times, it would betrilogy by Evelyn Waugh, without doubt.
