Farmers in Australia are seeking permission to import European garden snails to begin breeding programs and supply restaurants. This plan aims to introduce the larger European variety, considered more desirable for gastronomy, and address the issue of the native Australian snail, which is a pest.

Farmers in Australia are hoping to get permission to import live European garden snails for breeding and eventual sale to restaurants. The Australian government began a risk analysis in 2019 on bringing these molluscs into the country. The native Australian garden snail, likely introduced over a century ago, is considered a pest. Farmers want to introduce the larger European variety to start breeding programs.

The Department of Agriculture has outlined a plan where imported snails would come from approved farms in approved countries and have the necessary certifications. They would be quarantined and individually examined, with some being sacrificed for dissection to ensure they are free of pathogens. Afterward, they would be bred for a generation and then released to farmers. Victoria and Nick Howe founded South West Snails in Western Australia during the pandemic. They are already breeding larger local snails for restaurants by mating the biggest ones they find in vineyards. The snails are placed on breeding tables with soil and allowed to lay their eggs. Howe explains that they purge the snails before selling them by feeding them herbs, greens, or grains. The snails are then put into refrigeration, which induces hibernation, before being shipped live. They are hermaphrodites and can self-fertilize, but usually prefer a mate
