It was the night before Christmas and all the children were sleeping but Australian Federal Police were working hard to crack a decades-long festive mystery. 9News
The investigation began when children "woke to a clatter on Christmas Eves' past" and forensic experts jumped to find out who had been inside the homes.
"Children started to leave carrots, biscuits and milk out in the hope the mystery visitors would stay longer and they would wake and see them." A heavy boot print was found in more than 300 scenes and has been identified as either a male 7 or a women's 9.5.
